This page contains information about the mod version of DayZ. Standalone information is available here.

GPS provides the player with their current position in longitude and latitude. It will also display a minimap on the player's screen, which is very beneficial. This can be done by pressing Ctrl+M and is removed the same way. They are very rare and only spawn in military areas.

The GPS, when used with a Map, can be a very effective navigation tool, as you can find your location on the map using the coordinates provided by the GPS.

Short video tutorial on how to use the GPS for finding your location in DayZ.

Edit - Since so many of you are asking, you place markers on the map by holding Shift and left clicking on the map. Double clicking allows you to place a label, which is what happens in the Episode 3 blooper video.

The Coordinates given can be up to three digits long and show a general area.

Examples of coordinates are (066,045)

Meaning in the bottom / top of the map you are located at 066. and at the left / right of the map your are located at 045.

It gives you your location in grid reference for locating yourself on the map. It is rare to come across

It's worth nothing that when you have a GPS, you don't actually need a map. You will still see a map when you hit 'M', as well as all the GPS functions. This is useful to understand in the event you have a friend who does not have either a map or a GPS.

When I find a map in the game and press M to see it, my location already appears as if I had a GPS, so what's the use of this tool?
